Doctors have issued a warning about a sever flu outbreak what could potentially kill 1,000 people this winter.
According to HSE Assistant National Director for Health Protection, Dr Kevin Kelleher, the flu virus is responsible for between 200 and 500 deaths per year and due to the unpredictable nature of the virus, it has the potential to cause up to 1,000 deaths if it is a bad season.
Speaking at the launch of the HSE’s annual flu campaign, Dr Kelleher urged all healthcare professionals to get vaccinated against the virus.
He also reminded any member of the general public who is in a high risk category to get the vaccine.
