Woody Harrelson is in awe of Andy Serkis' acting skills after watching the performance capture expert work his magic in their new movie War for the Planet of the Apes.

The Hunger Games actor, a longtime fan of the Planet of the Apes franchise, stars in the latest instalment as a ruthless colonel who becomes engaged in a deadly battle with the apes, led by Serkis' Caesar.

Serkis relied on motion capture technology to bring his performance to life onscreen, and Harrelson was fascinated by the techniques the Brit used to monkey around on set.

"Andy Serkis (is) probably one of the greatest actors I've ever worked with; incredible," gushed Woody, who has previously co-starred with the likes of Edward Norton, Robert Downey, Jr., Christian Bale, and 2017 Best Actor Oscar winner Casey Affleck.

However, the 55-year-old admitted working alongside castmates wearing special camera headsets and bodysuits, as well as having little white dots marked on their faces to capture their every expression, took some getting used to.

"It takes a couple days," he told U.S. breakfast show Good Morning America. "They've got all these dots on their faces, and they're wearing these grey suits. You see the camera right in front of their face... It takes a little bit of getting used to."

Serkis has been mastering his role as Caesar in the franchise reboot since 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes. He reprised the character for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes in 2014, and again for the new sequel, War of the Planet of the Apes.

He also previously used motion capture technology to star as Gollum in The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy and 2012's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, as well as in 2005's King Kong and 2015's Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
