The Government has revealed new figures that show cigarette butts make up over half of the litter found on Irish Streets.

The Government has revealed new figures that show cigarette butts make up over half of the litter found on Irish Streets. The 2017 National Litter Pollution Report reveals that "ationwide cigarette related litter accounts for over 56% of litter in our towns and communities. This is mainly made up of cigarette ends."

Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment, Denis Naughten, revealed the report today and it is believe he will move to increase the on the spot fine for littering from €150 to €250. He also highlighted the need for education and awareness of litter.

He said that "While I am pleased with some of the results, which are very encouraging, there is more work to be done to ensure that the environment is protected from litter. We need to focus our efforts to maintain the improving standards being achieved across the country. A combination of awareness, education and enforcement is required in order to successfully combat our litter challenges."

The overall report shows the second-highest number of areas considered to be completely litter free at 15.6% and that 63.9% of the areas surveyed are only slightly littered.
