Almost 16 months after the tragedy, items belonging to the tragic crew of Rescue 116 have been recovered from the Atlantic Ocean.

Gardaí confirmed that a fisherman discovered a helmet and a lifejacket while fishing just off the west coast — about one nautical mile north of Achill Island last Thursday.

A garda spokesperson confirmed the items were handed to Gardai in Belmullet who have taken them into possession.

They said:

“A fisherman found a life jacket and helmet about 1 nautical mile north Achill Island on the evening of the 12th July 2018, the items have been handed to Gardai in Belmullet who have taken possession of the items.

It is believed the items are from Rescue 116 helicopter that crashed off Mayo in 2017.”

Captain Dara Fitzpatrick, Captain Mark Duffy, winch operator Paul Ormsby and winchman Ciaran Smith died when the helicopter struck Blackrock Island and crashed into the sea in the early hours of March 14, 2017.

The remains of Capt Fitzpatrick and Capt Duffy were located near Blacksod Bay while Mr Ormsby and Mr Smith tragically remain lost at sea.
