Elizabeth Olsen has apparently been tapped to play Wanda Maximoff/The Scarlet Witch in The Avengers sequel.

Elizabeth Olsen could be set for The Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Saoirse Ronan was originally tipped to take on the role of Wanda Maximoff/The Scarlet Witch, but according to Bleeding Cool the Irish actress turned down the part.

Now director Joss Whedon apparently has his sights set on Elizabeth, the sister of twins Mary-Kate and Ashley and star of unsettling drama Martha Marcy May Marlene.

The Avengers sequel will introduce the Maximoff brother/sister duo, with Kick-Ass star Aaron Taylor-Johnson is already confirmed to take on the role of Pietro Maximoff/Quicksilver.

According to the website, American star Elizabeth would have to adopt a "European" accent should she take the part.

The 24-year-old would be joining a cast that already includes Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man and Chris Hemsworth as Thor.

Elizabeth recently spoke about what it feels like to watch her career go from strength to strength.

"If I were to ask myself a year ago whether this would be happening, I would not believe it. It's really exciting. It's also a little intimidating," she smiled to askmen.

Elizabeth has had a very busy year already with films Kill Your Darlings and Godzilla.

The Avengers: Age of Ultron has a May 2015 release date.
