National Pizza Day 2018: Instagram's most mouthwatering Neapolitan pizzas9th Feb 18 | Lifestyle
There is fierce competition for the title of Naples' best pizza. Judging by the shots on Instagram, these are the best.
It’s hard to resist a tasty slice of pizza at the best of times – but indulging is every bit justifiable on National Pizza Day.
Many places claim to serve the best doughie delight with toppings, but the true pizza capital of the world has to be the southern Italian city of Naples.
The rich volcanic soil around Mount Vesuvius is responsible for the excellent tomatoes grown along the Amalfi coastline. Combined with the meticulous Neapolitan technique for creating the lightest and softest dough around, it’s a winning formula. In recognition of this fact, pizza spinning was given UNESCO ‘intangible cultural heritage’ status in December 2017.
Here are five of the tastiest looking Instagram posts of our favourite Neapolitan pizzerias.
Antica Pizzeria Port’Alba
Antica Pizzeria Port’Alba is widely believed to be the oldest pizzeria in world, opening its doors to the public in 1830. The sliced vine tomatoes on this pizza are roasted to perfection and the colours look absolutely fantastic. Fifth generation owner and maestro pizzaiolo Vincenzo Luciano has done an excellent job preserving the quality of this long lasting family business.
Pizzeria Di Matteo
Next up we have this sublime shot by the man himself, Salvatore Di Matteo, of what looks to be the most ideal lunch spot on the planet. Sitting by the sea under the Italian sun with the taste of that fluffy dough and fresh buffalo mozzarella – could it get any better?
Pizzeria La Notizia
At La Notizia, maestro pizzaiolo Enzo Coccia prides himself on his scientific precision. The restaurant is only open for dinner to allow the yeast time during the day to develop into the perfect dough. Showcased here is Mr Coccia’s buffalo sausage classic and – by the looks of things – his calculations are spot on.
Loosely translated as “good dough”, 50 Kalò has a strict four ingredients policy: water, flour, yeast and salt. Whether it’s the dough or pizzaiolo Ciro Salvo’s friendly smile, his pizzeria has achieved cult status amongst pizza lovers, and when the owner is not spinning dough, he’s likely posing for selfies with customers.
L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele
Da Michele is a spot pizza purists. With a rustic interior, no reservations and large queues, it’s clear these guys are focused on one thing – great flavour. They offer just two classic pizzas, the marinara and the margherita, and use San Marzano plum tomatoes and fior di latte cheese.
