Zoe Saldana sticks to a healthy diet to avoid working out19th May 17 | Fashion
The actress' family is moving towards becoming vegetarian.
Zoe Saldana focuses on healthy eating habits to maintain her physique because she struggles to stick to a regular workout schedule.
The Guardians of the Galaxy star has a busy career and personal life with husband Marco Perego and their three young sons, so she can't always hit the gym for a proper workout.
"I can't work out regularly, so I compensate by eating a lot healthier than I might otherwise," she tells Shape magazine. "Once you have relatively healthy eating habits, your workout can become playing with your kids, strolling around the neighborhood, playing airplane, or just changing diapers."
However, when Zoe does find the time to work out, she prefers a more relaxed approach and likes to fit in high-intensity interval training stints at home.
Meanwhile, Zoe admits her diagnosis for autoimmune disease Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, which she went public with last year (16), has changed the way both she and her family eats, going gluten and dairy-free in a bid to help her avoid having any flare-ups.
"I know I've become a very boring person to take to dinner, but I'd rather be that way than deal with health issues," she adds. "When you have an autoimmune condition, you have to stay away from foods that cause inflammation."
They are also planning to become vegetarians because she is dismayed by the way meat is produced for consumption.
"Society has a very violent, dysfunctional, and wrong relationship with how we cultivate and produce meat," she says. "So if I have to pay more to eat better, then I'll just balance my cheque book better..."
"I know what it's like to live on a tight budget, but my mum was one of those parents who gave us great food despite our budget," she adds. "That's where I get who I am from, and I'd like to be a voice of inspiration for my Latino community, as underage diabetes and high blood pressure are on the rise."
