Danielle Brooks: 'Don't compare yourself to nobody'

The actress insists it's OK to have over-indulged at Thanksgiving.

Orange is the New Black star Danielle Brooks wants to serve as every woman's inspiration when they set foot inside a gym.

The actress is famous for speaking out with affection for her own body, and hashtagging those posts, and she admits she understands how other women feel because she isn't always brimming with confidence.

On Sunday (27Nov16), she uploaded a video to Instagram about one of those times.

Talking straight to camera, she said, "I just left the gym, and as most people know I take my shirt off when I go to the gym. I had my shirt off and this lady walks in and she looked great with her shirt off. So immediately I'm like, 'Oh no!' I started to lose my confidence."

Brooks, who plays Tasha 'Taystee' Jefferson on the acclaimed prison drama, suddenly felt so bad that she wanted to put her shirt on again, but then checked herself and didn't.

"I realized I'm comparing myself to this woman, and I was like, 'Why just two minutes ago I was feeling great and now I'm not?'" Brooks added, "and I realized the reason I was feeling so great was because I was comparing myself to yesterday's Danielle. And today's Danielle is better than yesterday's. That's why I felt so good.

"Ladies, don't compare yourself to nobody. Just be a better you."

Brooks also shared a body-positive post earlier on Sunday in solidarity with anyone who feels like they overindulged during the American Thanksgiving holiday. She captioned the artwork of a woman's bikini-clad torso: "This is just a cute memo to all the girls (and guys) out there who feel like they overdid the Thanksgiving meal(s), who feel like bingeing or are in the mirror tearing themselves apart - no need."

"Love your body at every stage," she added. "I've been there before, racking my brain about my appearance feeling guilty and ugly after that Turkey Day Meal. I'm here to say don't. And if you did overdo it, hit the gym tomorrow, dance in the mirror, drink a gallon of water and chill out. But don't beat yourself up. Only one body, love it."
