Gwen Stefani would beg her friend to be allowed to play with her mum's make-up when she was little.

Gwen Stefani always felt intimidated by the "stuck-up hot girls" at make-up counters.

The No Doubt rocker is as renowned for her sleek beauty look, involving eyeliner and bold lipstick, as she is her vocals. Unsurprisingly she's been a huge fan of cosmetics for most of her life, with many of her first memories revolving around mascara and blush.

"Going to the house of one of my best friends, Amy Hunter," she said of her first make-up memory to Britain's Hello! magazine. "Her mum had so much Mary Kay, it was off the chart. I'd tell Amy to ask her mom if we could play with her make-up. I always loved it. When I was 20, I worked at a mall in Anaheim, California, in the older women's clothing department. I really loved making up these women and getting outfits for them. But my dream was to be a make-up artist. Those were the stuck-up hot girls behind the counter that made you feel l really intimated. Later, I did that. I worked in a mall that didn't even give you any lessons - they just put you there and said, 'OK, put the make-up on.'"

Gwen found fame with her band when their record Tragic Kingdom came out in 1995. At that point she had hordes of girls looking up to her style all over the world, which she finds amusing because no one helped her put her look together.

"I love a cat eye and red lipstick, or anything glamorous," she said. "When Tragic Kingdom came out, I had no make-up artist, no stylist. I did my make-up in disgusting bathrooms using just a compact. When I put those little gems on my eyes, I took them off every night and save them for the next show."
