Alexandra Burke looked to secure a safe passage to Strictly’s Blackpool week as she soared to the top of the leaderboard with the first Argentine tango of the series.

The singer and partner Gorka Marquez collected 38 points for their fierce routine to Gotan Project’s Mi Confesion and ended Saturday night joint top with Davood Ghadami and Nadiya Bychkova – who were awarded the same score for their charleston.

It meant Debbie McGee was not the highest scoring dancer for the first time in four weeks after a mistake during her salsa with Giovanni Pernice.

She missed her partner’s arm following a lift leading to the judges awarding the couple 35, but she remains favourite to take the glitterball trophy ahead of Burke according to the bookmakers.

TV presenter Ruth Langsford was bottom of the leaderboard for the second week running after her foxtrot with Anton Du Beke was pulled apart by the panel.

Craig Revel Horwood told the pair: “The beginning lacked any style, flair and charisma. Once you got into the foxtrot, you were actually trotting like a horse.”

A tearful Langsford scored just 18 and remains the bookies’ favourite to crash out of the competition this weekend ahead of Mollie King who has survived two consecutive dance-offs.

She collected only 22 points for her paso doble with AJ Pritchard, putting her at risk of another dance-off.

Paralympian sprinter Jonnie Peacock and partner Oti Mabuse collected 21 for their version of the foxtrot, while comedian Susan Calman and Kevin Clifton’s tango to Katy Perry’s Firework received 27 points as the pair dropped their normal comedic approach to performing.

Head judge Shirley Ballas told Calman: “I’m used to seeing you in a comic role … Not only did you bring it, you had lovely footwork.”

Meanwhile actor Joe McFadden and partner Katya Jones scored 33 points for their rumba, while Gemma Atkinson and Aljaz Skorjanic picked up 28 for their Viennese waltz to You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me.
