Singer Lorde was once stranded on a New York City subway train for hours - and no one recognised her.

The New Zealand native is a big fan of the Big Apple's public transport system and even thanked subway officials in the liner notes for her hew album Melodrama.

Asked about her affection for the underground railway network during an appearance on U.S. late-night host Seth Meyers' show on Monday (17Jul17), the Royals singer confessed she has had some awkward moments riding the train in New York.

"I understand if you've lived there for a long time and you've caught the subway five thousand times, you would hate it, but it still has a bit of romance (for me)," she told the host.

"But I did get stuck on the F (train) for four hours once."

Lorde revealed she simply sat on the floor with other commuters, and tried to hide the fact she had oatmeal in her bag.

"I thought, if anyone finds out, this is gonna be, like, a prized commodity."

Before the train started up again, Lorde began to wonder just how long she'd have to spend with the strangers around her.

"(I thought), 'They're gonna be my family, we're gonna be here forever'."
