Johnny Depp has gifted U.S. TV personality Ellen DeGeneres a portrait of an elephant after she spent years asking him to paint her one.

Premiere of Disney's 'Alice Through The Looking Glass'

The actor has been painting elephants for years, but the Finding Dory star had only heard about her friend's artistic efforts, because he had never shared one of his art pieces with her.

Realising he'd be taping an interview with Ellen to promote his new Pirates of the Caribbean movie earlier this week (beg15May17), Johnny decided to paint her a fresh elephant in his hotel room the night before.

Gifting it to the TV host at the end of their chat, which aired on Thursday (18May17), he warned Ellen not to touch the painting as it was "still wet".

He wrote on the back of the canvas: "Dearest Ellen, As promised, an elephant for you. I hope she makes you smile now and then..."

The thrilled host told the actor she would hang his elephant painting in her dressing room.

Depp confessed he's not the only or the best painter in his family, revealing son Jack has the makings of becoming a great artist.

"He's far better than I could ever be," he told Ellen.
