Viewers will be given the chance to get to know "the real" Paul Hollywood in a new Channel 4 cookery series titled A Baker's Life.

The silver fox caused controversy when he chose to move with The Great British Bake Off to Channel 4, while fellow judge Mary Berry and presenters Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc decided to stay with the BBC.

But now it seems his decision has paid off, as in addition to the reported huge pay cheque he is receiving for his new Bake Off gig, he has also been awarded his own programme.

Five 60-minute episodes of the documentary cookery series will air later this year (17), and will follow Paul reuniting with chefs who inspired him throughout his life. He will also be sharing recipes which are linked to key moments in his life while creating some of his favourite treats.

"Paul's credentials as one of Britain's most knowledgeable bakers are beyond doubt," Love Productions' Richard McKerrow said.

"How he came to become such a great baker with a passion for everything to do with baking is a fascinating story that hasn't been told. We're excited to be working with Paul and Channel 4 to tell that story."

The news of Paul's new role comes after it was revealed Jo Brand had made a deal with Channel 4 to continue presenting Bake Off spin-off An Extra Slice after moving from the BBC.

"As a completely mediocre baker myself, but lover of all things spongey and tarty, I am really looking forward to another Extra Slice and all the fun and frolics that brings," Jo said.

She will be commentating on the new Bake Off episodes, which will feature Paul alongside new judge Prue Leith while Noel Fielding and Sandi Toksvig present.

The new programmes will reportedly be 15 minutes longer than the BBC's, at 75 minutes, but this is to allow time for advert breaks rather than giving viewers any more Bake Off material.
