Luis Fonsi to be honoured at Billboard Latin Music Awards20th Apr 17 | Entertainment News
Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi will be honoured with the Spirit of Hope Award at the Billboard Latin Music Awards later this month (Apr17).
The hitmaker will be feted for his humanitarian work with St. Jude Children's Hospital.
The accolade was created in honour of late singer Selena Quintanilla Perez.
Fonsi has been supportive of St. Jude and other organisations fighting childhood cancer and in 2008, he became the hospital's Thanks and Giving campaign ambassador.
"I sang at fundraisers for St. Jude but realised nobody was the face of the Latin community for the hospital," he tells Billboard. "I said, 'I'd like to be that messenger.'"
Fonsi will also perform at the prizegiving on 27 April (17) in Miami, Florida. It is unclear if he will sing his new song Despacito, which features Daddy Yankee. On Tuesday (18Apr17), he joined Justin Bieber on stage at the Jose Miguel Agrelot Coliseum in San Juan, Puerto Rico to perform a remixed version of the track.
Actors Kate del Castillo and Carlos Ponce will host the awards, with guest presenters including pop star Sofia Reyes, pop duo Sin Bandera, and musician Juan Luis Guerra. Daddy Yankee, J Balvin, Wisin, Banda MS, and Nicky Jam, and others will also perform.
