The Watchmen star reveals he was messing around as his villainous Negan in the hit zombie drama when he broke character and burst out laughing - only to end up injuring himself, much to co-star Andrew Lincoln's delight.

"I was having a lot of fun doing Negan," he explained on U.S. breakfast show Today. "I had a Negan moment on set and I was kinda yelling and making fun of Rick, Andy's character, and I was having too much fun and I... ripped a muscle in my ribs from laughing! And he was like, 'Serves you right!'"

Jeffrey's moment of light relief was a welcome one after having to torment his co-stars' characters as Negan in the season seven premiere.

The opening episode featured Negan brutally killing off two of the main castmembers with a barb-wire wrapped baseball bat he called Lucille, and he recently confessed the tough shoot left him "completely drained".

"That whole episode was hard, and also because I did go through and smack everybody with Lucille at a certain point," he told Interview magazine in October (16). "Everybody took a hit. All of that was hard. It got to the point where I didn't want to do it anymore... Emotionally I was completely drained - all of us were, I would imagine. Andy (Lincoln) and I just went through the ringer."
