Lena Dunham has blasted a fan who attacked the ill actress and writer for cancelling a bookstore appearance.

The Girls star was booked to promote her book Not That Kind Of Girl, but a heavy cold forced her to scrap the appearance over the weekend (25-27Nov16) - and one fan was not happy, telling Lena she returned to work six days after giving birth via C-section.

Rather than let the matter go, Lena took to Instagram on Sunday (27Nov16) to take aim at the disgruntled mum.

"At first it made me laugh a lot - like, oh, I'm sorry, I left your award in the car," the actress wrote. "But then I really contemplated how dark it is that our culture prizes these speedy recovery narratives because guess what? They're actually ways to keep women from feeling f**king p**sed that they don't have proper maternity leave or medical and family care resources.

"We may not have an imminent policy change on the way, but we can change the way we talk about this stuff, and treat childbirth (or fatherhood! Or illness!) as the serious and personal journeys that they are."
