Earlier this month (Oct16) the former One Tree Hill star opened up about the violence she suffered at the hands of her first husband Michael Gambino, who she married in Las Vegas in 2004 after having dated him for just two weeks.

The 33-year-old, who is a contestant on the 2016 series of U.S. TV contest Dancing with The Stars, feels she has unburdened herself after revealing Gambino was abusive to her.

"It's a complete relief," she tells Nash Country Daily. "I felt like I've been having to hold in this secret and be ashamed of it. The truth is, you shouldn't be ashamed of it. It's Domestic Violence Awareness Month, so I wanted to definitely tell women that their voices need to be heard and that they are worthy."

The Why Ya Wanna singer, who recently separated from her third husband, American football star Mike Caussin, told People magazine about how her first marriage quickly descended into domestic abuse.

"He'd (Gambino) come home at 3 o'clock in the morning and pick me up out of bed, throw me onto the ground and start yelling and hitting," she said. "Then the next morning he'd be like, 'Hey, baby,' as if nothing had happened.

"He'd kick me out of the house, I'd sleep in the car and then that next morning I'd be with him in bed again.... My self-confidence went down each time he was abusive."

Gambino was subsequently sentenced to six years in prison after being found guilty of attempting to murder Jana in 2005. He committed suicide in 2012.

Kramer also embarked upon a short-lived marriage to actor Johnathon Schaech in 2010.

The actress turned singer announced in August (16) that she and Caussin were to split after 15 months of marriage amid allegations he had been unfaithful.

After the split Caussin, who has a nine-month old daughter, Jolie, with Kramer, issued a statement to People which read, "I acknowledge that certain actions and behaviors have caused issues in my marriage and I am deeply sorry for the pain I have caused Jana."

Caussin has also undergone treatment at a rehabilitation centre, a move which has been welcomed by his estranged wife.
