James Gunn keen for Guardians of the Galaxy spin-off movie18th Oct 16 | Entertainment News
The moviemaker's Guardians sequel will further explore the troubled relationship between Nebula and Gamora.
Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn is eager to create a franchise spin-off movie focusing on Karen Gillan's assassin character Nebula.
The filmmaker is currently working on a sequel to the big blockbuster, in which former Doctor Who star Gillan will reprise her role as the adopted sister of Zoe Saldana's character Gamora, but he admits there's another storyline from the comic book project he would love to pursue.
A fan raised the idea of having Nebula front her own movie in a recent Twitter chat with Gunn, and he confessed having Thanos' daughter as the focus of a future project has always been something he's been interested in exploring.
"I have a few favorites (characters) myself, but I agree that Nebula should lead her own film - it's something I've thought about from the beginning," he shared.
Gunn previously teased fans about Nebula's return in the forthcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, revealing her tense relationship with Gamora will be key to the new film's plot.
"The first movie was really about becoming a family. This movie is about being a family," he explained. "And what's harder, becoming a family or being a family? I think it's being a family. That's where you really have to deal with each other. And that's what this movie is about. And they're sisters. They are family, whether they like it or not. And they also want to kill each other, so it adds a new twist to being a sister."
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which also features Chris Pratt, Vin Diesel, Dave Bautista and Bradley Cooper, is due for release in May (17).
