Game of Thrones director tapped for Sony's Mulan movie

Alex Graves, best known for his work on television dramas like HBO's Game of Thrones, has been tapped by Sony to helm a new version of Mulan.

Game of Thrones director Alex Graves is in talks to take charge of a live-action adaptation of Mulan.

The legend of Chinese female warrior Hua Mulan is set to become the focus of two rival film projects, with Disney bosses developing one based on their animated 1998 hit, and Sony Pictures executives working on another.

Sony chiefs have now approached Graves - who hasn't directed a motion picture since 1997 - to return to the big screen for their Mulan tale, which will follow the young fighter as she takes her sick dad's place in the Chinese Imperial Army, reports

The 51-year-old director is best known for his work on television dramas like HBO's Game of Thrones where he directed the action-heavy The Mountain and the Viper episode which featured the fight between Oberyn Martell (Pedro Pascal) and Ser Gregor Clegane (Hafţór Júlíus Björnsson), in one of the show's iconic battle scenes.

He has also worked on The West Wing, House of Cards, Homeland and the upcoming NBC drama Taken which premieres next year (17).

Sony's Mulan will be written by Jason Keller and produced by Doug Belgrad, though casting details have yet to be revealed.

Prior to the announcement, industry sources reported that both movie companies were considering hiring Asian directors and predominantly Asian casts to recreate the classic Chinese tale after several controversies erupted over Hollywood's treatment of Asians and other people of colour -- including one concerning Disney's own Marvel Studios and their decision to cast Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One in superhero movie Doctor Strange.

Disney offered Ang Lee the director's chair for its version, but the Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon director has turned it down.
