Don't suffer in silence - when spots appear, bring in the big guns!

Acne treatments that hit the spot

Drew Barrymore set the Internet alight when she shared an acne treatment that won't break the bank. The Santa Clarita Diet star posted an image of the Clinique Acne Solutions Clinical Clearing Gel which she recommended because of its acne-fighting ingredient salicylic acid.

Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid that helps remove the excess oil produced by the sebaceous gland, which is affected by your hormones.

Natali Kelly, aesthetic practitioner and cosmetic dermatologist to the A-list, tells Cover Media: "Salicylic acid is the only ingredient able to dissolve sebum and oil on the skin. It works by dissolving the oil, clearing blockages, and has an exfoliating effect; removing dead skin off the surface helping to prevent further blockages."

If you don't exfoliate these dead skin particles away, they put a little plug on the pore, and then bacteria that is normal and healthy on the skin turns into acne bacteria - leading to spots.

Thankfully, there are an array of cleansers in the beauty aisles containing this spot-fighting ingredient. And you should start your day with a skincare regime designed to tackle problem skin.

Natali recommends luxury cleanser ZO by Obagi, Oilacleanse. The range includes a face wash for combination/acne prone skin, which gently purifies and cleanses skin, removes excess oils and impurities and helps prevent pores from clogging.

The range includes acne treating Cebatrol Oil Control Pads, Acne Treatment and a moisturizer, Ossential Daily Power Defense. Dr Howard Murad, Board Certified Dermatologist & Founder of Murad Skincare recommends a 3-step regimen of cleansing, using a treatment product specifically for blemishes or clogged pores and finishing with a moisturiser that has broad spectrum sun protection.

"If your skin is oily or becomes more oily at certain times I recommend ensuring you are cleansing every night and morning. So make sure you have a good cleanser like Murad Clarifying Cleanser which contains Salicylic Acid and helps to treat and prevent breakouts and keep pores clean and clear from oil," Dr Murad tells Cover Media.

Murad's Clarifying Cleanser from the Blemish Control range is designed to target breakout prone skin and promises to reduce 99 per cent of surface bacteria and dirt with less than a minute's cleansing. Other products available in the range include a toner, wipes, mask and blemish treatment.

Una Brennan's Super Facialist collection has a Salicylic Acid Anti Blemish range, which is a great budget alternative and contains all the products needed to zap spots effectively, including a Purifying Cleansing Wash and a Purify & Refresh Face Scrub.

"Always cleanse your skin before you retire to bed! It's important for all skin types, but even more so for oily skins. Without proper cleansing, bacteria can survive (and thrive) on your skin, leading to breakouts.

"And regularly clean your make-up brushes and pillow cases to wash away bacteria," adds Dr Murad.

And if you want something all natural to clear your skin, Australian brand Sukin's Oil Balancing & Charcoal Skincare range includes super-absorbent bamboo charcoal to manage oil control and blemish prevention for combination/oily skin types.

Bamboo charcoal is also extremely purifying and will deep cleanse skin. The range includes a Balancing Gel Cleanser, Pore-Refining Facial Scrub and an Anti-Pollution Facial Masque.
