Naomi (52), Philip (53), Natasha (18), Tammy Jo (13) and Natasha’s son Tyler (one and a half) all live together in their family home in Ballymun.
The Reilly’s have a significant health issues in the house: Cystic Fibrosis, asthma, migraines, depression and polyps. Two members of the household also exceed the recommended dose of paracetamol on a daily basis, and Philip suffers from bad daily headaches. The eating habits in the family could do with improvement: none of the family eat breakfast at home and their diet lacks fresh fruit and vegetables. Naomi smokes about 60 cigarettes a day, and as well as smoking, Philip drinks relatively heavily.
Although 13 year old Tammy Jo goes cheerleading regularly, the rest of the family are pretty sedentary. Naomi, Natasha and Tammy Jo go back to bed during the day for long naps.
On the show, the family meet the doctors in the studio. Naomi learns that she has lung damage due to her smoking and Philip is told that his headaches are actually caused by an addiction to over the counter medications and is told to stop taking them completely. After being used to a weekly intake of 60 paracetamol and 24 codeine based tablets, this will be a feat. Daughter Natasha is also overusing her inhaler and painkillers.
As well as bad cholesterol, the family have low vitamin D levels, and are all ordered to start a new diet, to clear out the junk food and to remove all of the painkillers from the house. No more daytime napping, Philip and Naomi must quit smoking and all the family must eat breakfast together.
Back at home the family throw out their meds and junk food. They do their best to follow Daniel’s plan and try to cut out the late night snacking and start on Niall’s fitness plan.
Halfway through the 8 weeks, Niall finds out that the family aren’t meeting their fitness goals – and pays a visit to try to motivate them. A family trip out to Fossett’s Circus provides the backdrop for the Reilly’s Temptation Test – will they succumb to candyfloss, fizzy drinks and jellies? Or will they stay resolute?
Back into the Consultation Room at the end of the 8 weeks, and the family get to hear exactly what their changes in diet and exercise mean to their long term health.
Tune into Doctor In The House this Wednesday on TV3 at 8pm to see if the Reilly’s make in progress in their eight week path to a healthier, better quality of life.
Series 3 of Doctor In The House is available to watch on-demand on 3player.
