• TV3 responds to calls for special debate by Enda Kenny and Gerry Adams.
• Taoiseach & Sinn Fein leader invited to debate European Referendum
• Head to Head Debate moderated by Vincent Browne.
• Debate at 8pm, Tuesday 29th May

TV3 has this evening invited An Taoiseach Enda Kenny TD and the leader of Sinn Fein, Gerry Adams TD to participate in a special head to head debate on The forthcoming European referendum.

The decision to stage the debate follows calls by both leaders for a platform to be made available to allow advocates of the Yes and No campaigns to air their views in public.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny recently told the Oireachtas “The decision on 31 May will present us with a moment of truth and of real consequence for the country and its people For my own part, I’ll spare no effort in seeking support for it all over the country.”

Last weekend the Sinn Fein leader said he would be happy to debate the issues surrounding the treaty with other party leaders adding that “Given the importance of this referendum to Ireland's future there should be a live TV debate with all party leaders, similar to the General Election. Obviously the key players in any debate will be the leaders of Fine Gael and Labour.”

TV3 Head of News Andrew Hanlon said: “Both the Taoiseach and the Sinn Fein leader have clearly stated their desire to participate in a national televised debate. Having previously declined to take part in last week’s TV3 debate, I am hopeful that both leaders will take the opportunity to address the public and argue their respective sides on this vitally important issue.”

The debate will air live on Tuesday 29th May at 8pm on TV3
