When a Serial Killer is finally brought to justice, the true extent of their crimes is rarely fully known. These calculating, evasive sociopaths are well versed at covering their tracks. Once behind bars, the only power over their captors they retain is withholding the full extent of their killing spree. TV3 will tomorrow (Tuesday 8th July) air Episode 1 of the ground-breaking series, ‘Killers Behind Bars’, which reveals the true scale of the crimes committed by some of the most notorious serial killers in recent years.
Killers Behind Bars is a three part series which follows real life ‘Cracker’ Professor David Wilson, as he uses the latest in cutting-edge Criminology techniques to try and link more unsolved cold case murders to these convicted killers.
With access to the investigating police officers, interview tapes and some crime scenes where no cameras have ever been allowed before, first Prof. Wilson examines their known crimes in detail, before building up a detailed criminal profile and Modus Operandi of each killer.
He then applies the latest techniques he teaches as Head of Criminology at Birmingham City University to compare them to other unsolved crimes to see if they can also be linked to these notorious murderers.
Meeting some of the country’s leading crime experts along the way, he uses the science of criminology to take an intimate look inside the minds of these monsters. With this evidence, he hopes to prove beyond reasonable doubt that their known crimes are simply the tip of the iceberg. The results are often shockingly clear.
In the first episode Prof. Wilson focuses his investigation on Steve Wright ‘The Suffolk Strangler’. In February 2008 Wright was sentenced to life for the murder of five women who worked as prostitutes in Ipswich, Suffolk. His brutal crime spree lasted just three months, and the judge sentencing him recommended that he should never be released from prison.
Whilst providing expert opinion at the time, Prof. Wilson immediately identified an experienced killer whom he believed had struck before. But as the media circus focused on the discovery of further bodies, his hunch was never followed up until now. At last, six years later, he returns to Ipswich to re-examine these brutal murders, which shook the heart of the community.
He also travels to nearby Norfolk where he discovers numerous cases of sex workers killed in eerily similar circumstances. A shocking new revelation leads David to dig deeper into the sex scene in Norwich and into Wright’s connections to it.
Eventually, after meeting some of the families of the Norwich victims, Prof. Wilson makes a dramatic discovery that he believes provides strong enough evidence for re-investigating one unsolved murder in particular.
‘Killers Behind Bars’ Episode 1 airs tomorrow (Tuesday 8th July) at 9pm on TV3.
