It’s Bread Week on The Great Irish Bake Off but the bakers’ nerves are put to the test when things get a little shaky for one contestant. In a dramatic twist, 31-year-old Limerick woman Hazel takes ill and has to be escorted out of the tent by paramedics. Things begin to go ‘a-rye’ when Presenter Anna Nolan spots a noticeably unsteady Hazel and asks if she’s feeling ok, to which Hazel replies:
“Yeah I’m okay, I’m just a little bit shaky for some reason. I didn’t sleep last night so I just feel a little bit weak today but I think I should be okay.”
Anna suggests to a pale and dazed looking Hazel that it might be best to have a sit down and she agrees saying “I might just have a little breather”. Before she gets a chance, St John’s Ambulance paramedics are on set to assist Hazel out of the tent.
With little to explain her illness, besides the fact she had not slept, Hazel does not finish the technical challenge.
Hazel fails to return to finish but this does not mean the other bakers are safe. The remaining six contestants ‘knead’ to ‘rise’ to the technical challenge which is six caramelised onion bagels and six poppy seed bagels.
Before bowing out of the technical challenge, Hazel managed to pull through the signature bake which was one savoury bread and one sweet bread. Judges Biddy White Lennon and Paul Kelly were looking for imagination with presentation and flavours and at this stage of the competition, it’s the ‘yeast’ the bakers can do.
Will Ali impress the judges with a bread from her native Czech Republic which is known as a Traditional ‘Kolace bread’? Will an unusually nervous Alex have a winner with his Walnut, Goats Cheese and Rocket loaf? Or will Hazel be eliminated for not finishing a challenge? Tune in to The Great Irish Bake Off at 9pm tomorrow night to find out.
The Great Irish Bake Off episode 5 airs Wednesday 18th June at 9pm on TV3.
