The real Wolf of Wall Street appeared on Ireland AM this morning for his only television interview while visiting Ireland. Mr Belfort, who wrote the New York Times bestseller, which was adapted for the big screen by Martin Scorsese, brought his highly successful sales and entrepreneurship live sales seminar “The truth behind the success of the real life wolf of Wall Street” to Dublin’s RDS with the help of collegetimes.com.
The former millionaire stockbroker is in the process of repaying $110 million to the investors he defrauded.
“I was never supposed to go out and create mayhem. That was sort of this weird left turn I took. So now I'm back to doing what I always thought I would do, which was really, go out there and make massive sums of money the right way. Which is also how I'm going to pay back the fine that I have. I actually announced on the US Tour, I’m giving 100% of the proceeds to investors. It'll be like, 50 million bucks to settle my fine. And I think for me, you know, redemption and closure is different for every human being, you can only do what you can do.”
Mr Belfort believes that the Oscar-nominated movie glorified his lifestyle and drug-taking.
“I don't think there's anything wrong with fast cars, beautiful women, great restaurants, exotic travel so long as you're making the money ethically, you're not hurting other people along the way. I don't think anybody in Ireland begrudges bankers because they're just bankers making money. They begrudge them because they didn't create value. So the idea is, what I'm saying is: ‘take the great stuff, the drive, the fun times, but you've got to do it ethically and also, you know, the drugs, that was insane.’ I'm sober seventeen years now so. And I can say that a lot of the insanity definitely was contributed by the drugs.”
Despite being sober 17 years, Mr Belfort believes he could spiral out of control again.
“Here's the thing, if you gave me a bag of blow, I'm sure if I was out tonight snorting cocaine...I might go wild again.”
The motivational speaker believes he can give people the skills to achieve wealth and success, to feel more empowered, and to get what you want in life. He said it does not have to be in your DNA.
“There might have been one Mozart who could play the piano the second he got to the piano but you can get a piano teacher who slows it down and says: "listen, this is what he was doing. Step one, step two, step three, step four." So if someone has the desire to become successful, then you can give them the skills to succeed. I'm not saying that if someone's a lazy bum and they don't want to, that's not the person for me. I'm a hard worker and I love nice things and I'm willing to work hard to get them.”
