PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Tuesday 25th February 2014.
Dishonest Dublin? - Midweek investigates with special ‘wallet drop’ experiment.
70% of those who inadvertently took part in TV3’s curious ‘wallet drop’ experiment returned the wallets.
20% returned the dropped wallets but removed the cash before doing so.
TV3’s experiment showed that north-siders are more honest than south-siders.
Midweek airs tomorrow (Wednesday) at 10pm on TV3
Ever wondered just how honest people would be if you dropped your wallet? Well TV3’s Midweek this weekputs the honesty of Dubliners to the ultimate test in a special ‘wallet drop’ experiment.
A total of ten wallets were dropped in various locations around the capital in an effort to find the most honest neighbourhood. Five wallets were dropped on the south side of Dublin and five wallets were dropped on the north side.
The wallets were all identical brown leather, with business cards, a family picture, various loyalty cards, receipts, vouchers, and euro notes.
The small experiment, carried out by Midweek’s Michael Ryan returned some interesting results. 70%of those who inadvertently took part in TV3’s ‘wallet drop’ experiment returned the wallets. However, of the ten wallets that were dropped in south side locations such as Rathgar, Ballsbridge, Crumlin, Ballyfermot, and Grafton Street and north side locations such as Cabra, Raheny, Finglas, Glasnevin and Henry Street, two were returned without money and three were not returned at all. Overall, TV3’s small scale experiment showed that north-siders are more honest than south-siders.
TV3’s Midweek reporter Michael Ryan said: “It was interesting to run the experiment and find out just how honest people would be when it came to returning my wallet. Thankfully my faith in humanity hasn’t been completely destroyed and I think 70% proves that we’re not a totally dishonest bunch. Most Dubliners, both north and south, I’m glad to say, would rather do a good deed than earn a quick buck. Although saying that, if the experiment was carried out on a larger scale the results could be very different!”
To see Midweek’s ‘wallet drop’ experiment tune into Midweek tomorrow (Wednesday) at 10pm on TV3.
