Following the infamous trial of Amanda Knox, who just a few days ago was re-convicted of the murder of Meredith Kercher,  Midweek speaks exclusively with Amanda Knox’s personal friend and counsel for ‘The Friends of Amanda Knox’, Lawyer Anne Bremner, about the on-going murder case that has sparked global interest.

Anne started her career as a prosecutor in Washington State, where she specialised in prosecuting sex crimes. During a five year period she successfully tried over 200 cases. She has never lost a civil case.

Anne tells Colette Fitzpatrick that Amanda would like to talk to the Kerchers and that she has always wanted to do so: “She would like to talk to them; she has always wanted to talk to them. She understands if they don’t want to talk to her. The gruelling nature of all this and the toll from the trials has been on her, but of course, it’s been on them [Meredith’s Family] and that by virtue of all this time and they’re working with the prosecution, she understands where they’re coming from. It’s something that she feels terrible for their family and she would like to offer her condolences and her sympathies and that Meredith was a wonderful person.”

Anne also discusses the devastating impact that the media had on Amanda’s trial, stating that Amanda was portrayed unfairly as some kind of “she-devil” especially in Europe, while Raffaele Sollecito was treated so differently. “I think she would not have been arrested, but for some of these kinds of things….’foxy knoxy’, the ‘she-devil’. The fact that she went out for pizza, for dinner, when her home was a crime scene, was looked at as probable cause by police.” She also reveals that Amanda told her the whole affair has been like crawling across a bed of nails and now she has to do it all over again.

As there is no ‘double jeopardy’ in Italy, Anne believes that the state department will not extradite Amanda. “If they do go beyond that [precedent of not extraditing US citizens back to Italy] and say, we’re going to have an extradition hearing in western Washington in the western district, federal, then a federal judge is going to have to look at the issue of factual innocence as part of the treaty with Italy and the US and there’s also the issue of double jeopardy which I think permeates all of this, which means you can’t be tried twice for the same offence.” “In Italy they don’t have that protection and I think it’s going to be a big deal in Amanda Knox’s case.”

Anne also states that the evidence in the case was compromised, contaminated and not admissible for forensic evidence and that is why the case should be over.

Midweek airs Wednesday 12th February 2014 at 10pm on TV3.
