Following five gripping instalments of this epic blockbuster mini-series, in the final episode of the series Jesus’ fate must be decided. While High Priest Caiaphas condemns him to die, it cannot happen at Passover, so he must appeal to Roman Governor Pilate. Pilate feels intense pressure to appease his worried wife or keep the peace with Caiaphas, and he deflects his decision to the public. The crowd choose to release the murderer Barabbas, and so begins Jesus’ fateful and wretched climb to Golgotha, the place of his crucifixion.

Mother Mary and the disciples live through the horror of his final hours but, as he breathes his last breath, the skies blacken, an omen of what is to come. The grief of Mary Magdalene and the disciples’ turns to joy when they realise their Lord has risen from the grave.  At Pentecost the Holy Spirit invigorates the disciples, and they now have the strength to spread Jesus’ message, despite the hefty challenges they face. Disciples now become apostles – messengers of word of their Lord Jesus Christ. Early Christian persecutor Paul becomes the greatest messenger of all, taking the word into the heart of the Roman world, bringing countless followers to the new faith.  The word miraculously lives on through the disciples and beyond.

Mission/Betrayal

Jesus feeds the crowds in Galilee and brings a dead man, Lazarus, back to life. He later enters Jerusalem riding on a donkey - a declaration that he is the Messiah.  Jesus turns on the money-changers in the Temple, while Caiphas coaxes Judas into betraying him. The disciples are thrown into turmoil by Jesus’ announcement that their shared supper together will be their last. Christ is arrested and condemned to death as the disciples scatter. He is tied up and faces trial by the Jewish elders, despite Nicodemus’ protestations. The accusation: blasphemy. The punishment: death. Caiaphas finds Jesus guilty and the crowd outside is told the verdict. Everyone feels betrayed (4/5).
