TV3 GROUP RELEASE

IMMEDIATE: Monday 25th November.

Anton and Alan face off in an 'I'm A Celeb' style Bushtucker Trial.

Ireland AM’s Anton Savage and Alan Hughes went head to head in an ‘I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here!’ style Bushtucker Trial.

After a blasé comment on air last week, Anton is literally made to eat his words. Courtesy of Jungle Dave, the pair had lots of creepy crawlies to nibble on!

Ireland AM airs Monday to Friday on TV3 from 7am – 10.45am on TV3.

Ireland AM presenters Anton Savage and Alan Hughes were left squirming in their seats this morning (Monday 25th November) after taking part in a live Bushtucker Trial. Last week Anton proclaimed that he was more than capable of putting mind over matter and tucking into a meal of insects!

“Is it not possible before you do it to go ‘right psychologically I know I’m going to have to eat really nasty stuff? I’m just going to do it, cool. I’m not going to go ugh ahhhhh!’ I bet I could eat a larva without getting all squirmy!”

After such a bold statement Ireland AM producers knew they couldn’t let Anton get away lightly. Ireland AM recruited wildlife expert ‘Jungle Dave’ to get some tasty treats for Anton - and poor Alan just got roped in along the way. As the pair took their places, Sinead Desmond got in on the action and let a tarantula crawl up her arm. Anton remained cool as a cucumber while Alan was a little apprehensive.

“When’s the spa treatment coming up? Can you take the tarantula off Sinead please?”

When Sinead asked if Anton was nervous he said no but joked that it’s not what he signed up for.

“I’m not eager! I remember signing up to an hour of current affairs from seven to eight. How did I end up here?”

First up was a crunchy bowl of live African crickets. Alan got stuck in but as soon as it touched his lips, he threw away. While Anton was slow to pick a cricket up, he developed a taste soon enough. Once he dropped the creepy crawly in, he even went back for seconds!

Next up, Jungle Dave unveiled a bowl of locusts. He demonstrated how a pro eats them, but Alan failed to build a hunger for the little guys!

“Can I just have a bit of it? I’m not very hungry. I’ve just had breakfast.”

Alan had a nibble and threw it back in. Anton decided against the jumpy locusts. The third morning snack was a juicy bowl of meal worms. Jungle Dave revealed that the slimy worms turn into a type moth and even he had not tasted them before. Both Anton and Alan took a chomp of the worms but hardcore Anton didn’t even flinch. Alan on the other hand did more wriggling around than the worms themselves and ended up spitting it out!

Last but not least, Anton and Alan feasted their eyes on a bowl of wax worms. Alan bit the bullet and threw the entire worm in. Before he had a chance to feel too pleased with himself, Anton began tossing the wax worms in the air and catching them in his mouth. Once again, he went back for seconds! Alan bowed down and admitted defeat.

“Look at him – you don’t have to have seconds! Well and truly beaten at the Bushtucker Trial. Hands down to you, well and truly. I didn’t know they were going to be alive.”
