In this episode of Downton Abbey, a birthday party is planned for Robert, but Rose’s surprise contribution to the event ruffles feathers both upstairs and down while a new farming venture on the Downton estate comes with dramatic repercussions for Mary.
Meanwhile, Lady Edith gets some much unexpected and unwelcome news that she may be pregnant which leaves her longing even more for Michael. It remains a mystery as to Michael’s whereabouts which leaves Lady Edith in a very uncomfortable position as she must keep her pregnancy a secret.
Speaking to Xposé’s Aisling O’Loughlin, Cara Theobold, who plays Ivy Stewart, talks about the roaring twenties and the difference between upstairs and downstairs during this period and her experience of joining the cast as a new character:
“Definitely change is a big thing and moving into the twenties, you will see for the upstairs characters the main thing is the fashion and the hair. Whereas downstairs, we’re pretty much, there’s work to be done and as much as I would probably like to wear one of these beautiful gowns that they wear upstairs, Ivy wouldn’t be able to do that, you can’t scrub the tables, gut a fish and make things when you’re all dolled up.”
“The day to day life, they would work all week, all day, every day apart from one afternoon off. A half day off a week, which in the modern day if that happened it would not be allowed so I think that we need to remember that, when we’re downstairs playing these characters, it’s hard work at the end of the day.”
“I feel very, very privileged to be part of such a successful show and working with such incredible actors especially [when] this was my first job last year.”
“I feel very lucky to be part of something [where] I can learn really and watch these pros do their thing and I aspire to have a career like them.”
