Change is certainly in the air at Downton Abbey as an exciting opportunity for Alfred creates tension between Ivy and Daisy. Isobel appeals to Violet’s sense of charity, but it doesn’t come without a fight!

Meanwhile, despite getting rid of that horrid Edna Braithwaite in the last episode, Tom Branson, played by Ireland’s own Allen Leech, is still feeling very much out of place at Downton as he considers a whole new future for himself and baby Sybbie.

Speaking to Xposé’s Aisling O’Loughlin, Lily James, who plays Lady Rose MacClare, talks aboutbeing one of the latest additions to Downton Abbey and opens up about the many changes it has made to her life:

“It’s been really exciting for me and it’s also just been a big journey of figuring out how to embrace her vitality and her difference. It can be quite scary entering a new show anyway of course and then entering with a character that’s so different.”

“I’m getting to dance, I’m getting to listen to all this new music that I hadn’t. I’m listening to Al Jolson and different people from the time. I get to have lots of fun with admirers and boys so she’s basically living a great life.”

“She’s moved into the house which is just the greatest news for her. She’s away from Scotland and her horrible mother and she’s not in India. She’s trying to behave herself because she wants to fit in but obviously a horrible feeling in the house because Matthew has died but she’s gradually trying to break a few rules.”

“It’s completely daunting; I mean these are my first press days for it. It’s just mad to see all these different countries here to talk to us and they all love the show. It’s really incredible and quite overwhelming.”

“I’m a natural brunette so I’ve only just died my hair blonde. I look very different from my character up until now so I haven’t had any problems with being recognised so it’s been the same as before.”

“I really like to research into the time because it sort of gives you a real support and knowledge of the background especially for Rose because she’s pushing the boundaries so much it’s good to know what she’s fighting against. You learn that through the history and the political context and all that kind of stuff.”

Downton Abbey S4 Episode 5 airs Wednesday 23rd October at 9pm on TV3.
