‘The Great Irish Bake Off’ episode 4 airs Thursday 10th October at 9pm on TV3.

Interviews with judges & contestants available on request.

The Great Irish Bake Off returns this week and the remaining nine contestants struggle across the board. Judge Biddy White Lennon sets her first technical challenge – Cider & Apple Warm Pudding with Elderflower Custard. Biddy is looking for them to follow the recipe to the letter and pay special attention to the arrangement of the apple slices on top.

“I really don’t want, in this technical challenge, to see the bakers playing safe. It’s time to stretch their wings and fly.”

For many of the contestants, it is their first time attempting fresh custard and this definitely shone through with the results. There was curdling, splitting, scrambling bubbling and even an eggy, runny custard – not what Biddy and Paul had in mind!

Next up it was the second ‘showstopper’ challenge of the series and the judges made sure the bakers are not in for an easy ride. Biddy and Paul request a trio of desserts – a crumble, a roulade and a bread-based dessert. They contestants have five hours to put this together and they are expected to pull out all the stops.

One contestant in particular couldn’t stand the heat in the kitchen. Killiney woman Maryanne struggled to fight back the tears as her trio did not go to plan. Even as host Anna Nolan tried to comfort the emotional contestant, Maryanne hurried her away assuring Anna it would make her cry more.

Following the challenge, a disappointed Maryanne said: “I’m kicking myself but it was a tough challenge. I set myself a lot in five hours and it just didn’t pay off.”

Will Maryanne pay the price for her dessert mishaps or will another baker face the chop?
