The Great Irish Bake Off returns with episode three where the bakers are put to the test with a signature bake and a technical challenge. This week it’s all about bread and judges, Paul and Biddy, have set quite the challenge. The contestants must tackle a bread basket containing soda bread, tea bread and non-yeast bread. As it is a signature bake, the remaining bakers must put their own spin on the traditional recipes. Some contestants are more adventurous than others with ingredients ranging from bacon and onion to toffee and walnut.
Although the bakers are in direct competition, a sense of family has come over the Bake Off Tent. When student Stephen finds himself in a baking dilemma, Aoife is quick to rush to his aid by offering her oven – but will this be her downfall?
Bridget worries that her track record of under-baking on the show will strike once again and unfortunately her fear becomes a reality when her tea bread is wet and doughy. She hopes that she can redeem herself in the technical challenge.
“You despair at yourself quite often when you make mistakes you don’t normally make but I guess it just means that coming into this [technical challenge] there’s not really room for error.”
This week’s technical challenge is one of Paul’s favourite party breads – “tear & share” bread with a range of seeds for toppings. He’s looking for a nice, tidy finish to the bread but he’s not making it easy with the addition of live yeast.
Many of the contestants have never used live yeast before and are going into the challenge blindly. Presenter Anna reveals she tried the recipe herself with disastrous results, which didn’t offer any reassurance to the bakers.
Tune in to see which baker will fall flat and who will rise to the challenge?
