Following on from the impressive premiere of season 4 last week, TV3 returns to Downton Abbey this Wednesday for episode 2. Emerging from her grief, Mary starts to take an interest in the running of the estate, but is met with resistance from Robert. An unsuspected letter arrives in the house for Lady Mary, which has the whole family anxious. The letter is from her late husband Matthew regarding the Downton Abbey estate.

Meanwhile, Anna reaches out to help a desperate but proud Molesley and Bates hatches a plan to help him. While out for a bit of fun, Rose gets into a sticky situation at a tea dance in York and ends up having to pose as a housemaid in Downton Abbey!

Speaking to Xposé’s Aisling O’Loughlin, Laura Carmichael, who plays Lady Edith Crawley, speaks about her return to Downton following Matthew’s shocking death and how the cast get on so well their more like family now!

“Yes we’re sort of picking up where we left off with Michael Gregson, the editor. There’s been about six months passing since the last episode and they haven’t seen each other because obviously the news of Matthew dying has been big family news so there’s sort of the official time of mourning. When we re-join the family, Edith is planning her next visits to London.”

“You wouldn’t have expected from the first series that Edith would be the one writing for a newspaper. I think it’s because of all those hard knocks she’s had and being jilted and not getting the conventional marriage that has sort of forced her to speak up, and speak for herself and think for herself which is great.”

“It [Matthew’s death] has left us in a good place to tell some really interesting stories. It really affects the whole house. In a weird way it’s created a really strong series four and we really don’t gloss over it in anyway.”

“We sort of mess around really. We sort of get on too well and have a laugh. It’s very comfortable. We’re more like a family now. It’s been four years. We know each other fairly well.”

Downton Abbey S4 Episode 2 airs Wednesday 2nd October at 9pm on TV3.

Xposé airs Wednesday 2nd October at 6pm on TV3.
