  • Gilles Mendel: Dresses must feel right

Gilles Mendel believes women should have "chemistry" with their clothes.

Gilles Mendel says women have to have "chemistry" with their dresses.

The J. Mendel designer has become one of the most fashionable people to consult when dressing for the red carpet, with stars such as Taylor Swift and Emily VanCamp wearing his designs.

The fashion mogul says colour and the "right chemistry" are two crucial elements when a woman is picking a gown.

"Regarding colour - at the end of the day, women want to wear colour, it's not about black and hardness right now," Mendel explained to The Hollywood Reporter.

"Jewel tone colours are the most complimentary to the woman - and there has to be a special chemistry between the woman and the dress. The right chemistry, right colour - it's not about blue for everyone, or red. It's great to see them all wearing colours that flatter them specifically."

Swift is just one of the designer's many celebrity fans, choosing a white J. Mendel suit for her appearance at the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) this year.

Mendel says the country singer has a very strong sense of style and knows exactly what she wants from her outfits.

"We have an ongoing dialogue with Taylor Swift. For such a young lady to have such a great sense of what she wants to wear is unusual," he marvelled.

"I'm very excited to be part of the process. We really collaborate with her, when she has a new idea in her mind. She had the idea of doing suiting and we did her first suit. She definitely has a strong point of view - I like to work with creative people, who have a mindset. When they're insecure, it's much more difficult. They don't trust you."

Mendel showed his resort 12/13 collection at the 3rd Annual Autumn Party for charity this week.
