  • Stay cosy in cocoon coats

Coats are big, double-breasted and calf-length this season.

When fashion throws out a trend which is both stylish and comfortable, it's a good idea to grab it with both hands as it doesn't happen often. This season designers have been kind by creating a wealth of coats which are so warm and chic you won't want to take them off.

For Fall/Winter 12 the oversized coat is king, so don't even bother looking at a cropped jacket or a full-length mac. The beauty of this trend is there are colour types for everyone, whether you like to pack a punch or prefer to blend in with the crowd.

Céline's Paris Fashion Week show was packed with loose-fitting outerwear. There were versions in white, electric blue and navy, as well as a geometric patterned coat in red, blue and white. They all fell to mid-calf, boasted big pockets and simple buttons down the front.

Chanel brought the pizzazz with a hot pink version with silver piping around the cuffs and down the front, while at Jil Sander things were kept natural with a taupe affair.

Other designers offered double breasted versions with most coming in a thick fabric which is almost like felt.

The trick with this look is to try on as many versions as possible. Getting the length write is crucial, and if you're petite you might want to try a different look completely. As the shape is quite boxy and the coats are long, they can swamp small frames.

Try wearing with heels to feminise the trend. Keeping your lower half slim-fitting is also a good idea, so skinny jeans, tights and leggings all work well.

Accessories-wise go for oversized clutch bags, anything thrown over your shoulder will only ruin the line of your coat.
