    Oscar de la Renta: I picked up pins

    Oscar de la Renta learnt the foundations of his fashion career by "picking up pins" from Cristobal Balenciaga 's floor.

    Oscar de la Renta was educated about design by observing Balenciaga while "picking up pins".

    The 80-year-old designer's first steps into the fashion industry were through hands-on experiences. His first big break was landing a position at Cristobal Balenciaga's Spanish atelier, after a friend showed him Oscar's sketches.

    "When people ask me what I did there, the truth is, I was picking up pins from the floor," Oscar revealed to British Vogue magazine. "I never went to fashion school, but I saw Balenciaga working. Today's designers work very differently."

    The legendary red gown creator has managed to stay current throughout numerous decades working in fashion. He has designed for Jacqueline Kennedy and Britain's Duchess of Cambridge as well as for fashion houses Lanvin and Balmain in his long and lustrous career.

    Oscar revealed the secret to his success very much follows the same principles of observation he adopted when he started designing.

    "It's important to be surrounded by young people who disagree with me," Oscar explained. "They make me look at things in a different way. Every day you have to reinvent yourself."
