  • Chanel show inspired by wind

Chanel's creative director Karl Lagerfeld was inspired by wind when coming up with his Spring/Summer 13 line.

Chanel's Paris Fashion Week catwalk was lined with wind turbines this morning.

Creative director Karl Lagerfeld is known for staging extravagant shows in the French capital, and this season was no exception.

The presentation was held at the Grand Palais, with Karl arranging for giant wind turbines to feature along both edges of the runway - which was made of squares, evoking solar panels. Many thought it was making an environmental comment, but he was quick to shoot down the rumours.

"It's more about the mood of the times, not something you have to translate. It's all about the wind, it's in the air," he told vogue.co.uk.

"I started sketching in Central Park and it was so hot that I wanted fresh air."

For Spring/Summer 13 Karl kept things simple, choosing clean lines and key accessories.

Among the looks were short jackets, which have been all over the runways in Paris. One black version with white spots was paired with a simple black leather skirt. Karl added leather short gloves and a necklace of oversized pearls to the look, making it instantly more edgy.

The necklaces were one of the key looks. Although they weren't tight, the pearls - or in some cases metallic baubles - were so large they almost had the appearance of chokers.

Other looks included easy shift dresses with a chiffon overlay, and perfectly-tailored jackets which fell to mid-thigh - the same length as the skirts they were paired with.

Volume has been big business at all four Fashion Weeks this season and it was something Karl also played with. An electric-blue dress boasted three-quarter sleeves which were puffy, while others boasted cocoon shapes.

Some frocks continued the designer's theme as they included a propeller print, while others had a sequinned solar panel design.

Shoes were wedged and sported ankle ties, while wide-brimmed hats also features.

Tonight Alexander McQueen will debut, with show season drawing to a close tomorrow with presentations by Louis Vuitton, Miu Miu and Elie Saab.
