    Jada Pinkett Smith isn't a strict parent

    Jada Pinkett Smith lets her children make their own decisions.

    The 'Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted' actress - who is mum to actor Jaden, 14, and singer Willow, 11, - said she doesn't try to control her children who are both carving out successful careers in the spotlight and views their relationship as a partnership.

    The 41-year-old star told People magazine: ''I think that old school style of 'I'm your parent and I'm greater than you' doesn't work. What I establish with my children is a partnership. I'm not necessarily dictating what is happening in their lives.''

    But Jada insists she is more hands on when it comes to her children's self esteem and is constantly helping them deal with criticism from the public by instilling ''the power for individuality''.

    She said: ''We ... communicate with our kids in a way that our message overpowers any other message that they get out there.

    ''We can't control what our kids learn anymore. We have to inform them and have real conversations ... and [create] that foundation of them feeling assured in themselves.

    ''I think for our children ... they feel like we really care and they come to us and go, 'Mommy, I'm having this problem.' And it's like, 'Okay, let's figure this out together.' And it empowers them.''

    Jada is preparing to celebrate her 15th wedding anniversary with her 44-year-old husband Will Smith in December and calls their relationship ''a great accomplishment''.

    She recently said: ''There are no negatives being married to Will Smith! I swear Will has to be one of the most outstanding fathers. Not only just loving him, and him being my husband, but when I look at how he loves his children, I go, 'Thank you! I made such a good choice.' I hit the jackpot with that one.''
