    Elle Fanning plays down Oscar chances

    Elle Fanning is embarrassed critics have tipped her for an Oscar.

    The 'Ginger & Rosa' actress' stellar performance has been tipped for a Best Actress nomination for the 2013 Academy Awards alongside the likes of Marion Cotillard ('Rust and Bone') and Keira Knightley ('Anna Karenina'), but the 14-year-old star is shocked her acting skills have been recognised.

    Elle blushed: ''Oh God! That's extremely nice of people to say that, but you never know what's going to happen and you can't predict the future.''

    The starlet plays 16-year-old London schoolgirl Ginger in her new film, which sees her alter-ego struggle to cope with her mother's weakness and her father's blossoming relationship with her best friend Rosa.

    Elle explained: ''This is a character who tries to put on the appearance of happiness to hide the pain she's feeling underneath. So most of the time, on camera, the looks that she gives are way more important than the words that she says.''

    The Marc Jacobs model first appeared on camera aged two in Sean Penn's drama 'I am Sam' and has since accumulated screen credits in movies such as 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button' and 'Super 8'.

    Elle - whose sister is 18-year-old fellow child actress Dakota Fanning - admits acting has been a part of her life ever since she can remember and her earliest memories involve film sets.

    She added to The Times newspaper: ''We were supposed to be tennis players, but then my sister did a little acting camp, and loved it.

    ''Sometimes I'll have crazy flashbacks from when I was young. I'll see a colour, or a dress and remember something about a movie. They're like baby pictures for me. They're just a part of me.''
