Last season's Australian Open finalist Maria Sharapova showed no signs of a sore right collarbone as she won in straight sets and didn't lose a game in a comprehensive 6-0, 6-0 win over fellow-Russian Olga Puchkova.
It took Sharapova just fifty-five minutes to wrap up victory at the Rod Laver Arena. Sharapova has a potential third-round match against American Venus Williams.
Williams, the 25th seed, easily got past Galina Voskoboeva of Kazakhstan, 61, 6-0 at the Hisense Arena.
Williams, who missed out on the Australian Open last year because of illness, completed her match in an hour.
