A 38-year-old woman has been awarded €375,000 after suing her father for sexually abusing her for a decade.

Ailish Smith, who waived her anonymity, was a toddler when the systematic abuse started.

In 2006 her father Gerard pleaded guilty to abusing her and was jailed for six years.

She sued him for damages in the high court saying even after his conviction he continued to state publicly that she was lying.

Mr Justice Eamon De Valera dismissed Gerard Smith arguments that his daughters case should be thrown out because of her delay in taking it. The judge said she was entitled to sue and said the appropriate sum was 375,000 euro.

The judge indicated he would have awarded more if the Supreme Court hadn't put a cap on a previous award he had recently approved for 450,000.

Gerard Smith wasn't in court today to hear the judge order him to compensate his daughter for systematically abusing her.
