Vigils have been held in the wake of a cinema shooting in the US where 12 people were killed.

58 people were injured after a man in a gas-mask threw tear gas canisters at a midnight screening of the new Batman movie before firing on the crowd in Aurora Colorado.

The suspect, 24 year old James Holmes, who was arrested outside the cinema, will appear in court in Colorado on Monday morning.

Police chief Dan Oates said he was well prepared for the attack.

Investigators say the suspects home in Colorado is heavily booby-trapped and cannot gain access to the apartment.

In the US Capital Washington DC President Obama ordered flags to be flown at half-mast.
