Met Eireann is warning that the equivalent of three weeks rain could fall this evening and tonight in parts of the country.
It says up to 40 millimetres of rain are expected in the east and south.
Meanwhile flooding has gripped areas of the continent with heavy floods causing damage in areas of Eastern Europe.
In England flood alerts are in place in over 130 areas of the country, with agencies predicting the "worst of the year so far" with transport links and homes likely to be "severely affected".
