Gormley proposes new tolls

23.07.10

In the week that the government has been talking of stimulus packages to boost spending, we may also be on the verge of further cuts in the public service.

Tolls on all national roads and job cuts in local government are just some of the recomendations of the local government efficiency review group.

Overall, the group that reported to Minister for the Environment John Gormley made 106 recommendations totalling €511 million in efficiencies.

And the Minister  is expected to begin implementing some of its recommendations almost immediately.

The most controversial recommendation is that tolling charges be extended from motorways to national roads.

It has argued this would be consistent with Government policy on the environment by incentivising road users to use other transport and would also allow a stream of revenue for local councils to invest in local roads.

The group has acknowledged that the move would be seen as controversial and politically unpopular.
