Fine Gael prioritise saving jobs

04.04.09

Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny says he does not believe Tuesday's emergency budget will do enough to put the country on the path to economic recovery.

He was speaking at his party's Ard Fheis in Dublin, where economic matters and the reform of the health service were among the topics addressed.

Enda Kenny accused the Government of being out of touch with reality.

The day's talks revolved around plans to stimulate the economy and the party has said that saving jobs is their number one priority.

They say the rising unemployment rate has reached a state of emergency.

A number of proposals have been put forward at the talks today, including re-working the National Development Plan and creating a green revolution that would result in thousands of new jobs.

Communications spokesperson, Simon Coveney says that they should focus on bringing Ireland into the digital era and plans to create jobs in doing this.

"The New Ireland must be built on world class telecommunications.  Next generation broadband must be available to our people and our businesses," said Mr Coveney.

Elsewhere, Fine Gael's spokesperson for older people, Paul Connaughton, says the new Nursing Home Bill is flawed.

The Galway East TD told his party's Ard Fheis that people who inherit land from their parents are likely to lose out in the long run.

Meanwhile, delegates at the Ard Fheis have passed a motion to reverse the decision to abolish the automatic entitlement of old age pensioners to a medical card.
